General tree description

Quercus serrata grows to around 15M in height. It has grey or reddish-brown bark with wide longitudinal ridges. The leaves are elliptical in shape, up to 18cm long by 9cm wide and with serrated margins. They are leathery, bright green above, greyish-white and hairy beneath, remaining on the tree late in the year and turning a burnt-gold colour in autumn before falling. The acorns are around 2cm long, up to one third enclosed in a cup with hairy, triangular scales.
