This tree is at the north end of the Hawthorn group. No thorns were seen on the tree.

It was planted as Crataegus tanacetifolia. Its leaves are not typical of C. tanacetifolia in that they are not grey-green and downy. However the fruit is consistent with C. tanacetifolia being yellowish, around 23cm in diameter, tasting of apple and usually containing five pips.

This could be an accidental hybrid of C. tanacetifolia with C. azarolus.

General tree description for Crataegus tanacetifolia

Crataegus tanacetifolia is a small, usually thornless tree growing to around 10 metres. It has grey-brown, square cracked bark and grey, deeply-cut, downy leaves. In mid summer there are clusters of fragrant creamy white flowers, 2.5cm across. The fruits are yellowish haws ripening in autumn, 22mm in diameter and containing five pips.
