General tree description

Aesculus hippocastanum 'Baumannii' is a cultivar of the Common horse chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum. It is a medium to large tree that typically grows 18 to 25 metres tall, with an upright oval-rounded crown. It has palmate compound leaves, each with seven (or less frequently five) spreading ovate-oblong leaflets up to 25cm long. These emerge light green but mature to dark green in summer. In mid spring there are ornamental candles of double white flowers with red or yellow markings. This cultivar does not produce the fruits (conkers) characteristic of the species.
