Croquet

Croquet first made its appearance in the Cardiff parks in the year 1906, when a piece of lawn was set aside for the purpose on the western side of Victoria Park. It was formally opened on June 14th 1906 by Councillor C.F.Sanders.

In July 1906 the Western Mail reported that the croquet green (along with the tennis courts and bowling green) was always hard worked, and the turf was being damaged by the heavy boots of the users of the greens, so much so that it was suggested that the Corporation should provide cheap over-shoes to be loaned out at a half-penny per game.
